Marija Borisovna Strelenko ( Russian Мария Борисовна Стреленко , scientific transliteration Marija Borisovna Strelenko ; born June 16, 1976 in Leningrad ; † January 13, 2011 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian biathlete .

Life

Marija Strelenko was a sports soldier and also started for an army sports club. She started biathlon in 1990. Towards the end of the 1998/99 season she made her debut in the Biathlon World Cup at Holmenkollen in Oslo and missed winning the first World Cup points as 30th of the sprint by five and 26th of the pursuit by just one place. The Russian achieved this in her third race as 25th of the first race, an individual in Hochfilzen , of the 1999/2000 season . In addition to Galina Kuklewa , Swetlana Tschernoussowa and Albina Achatowa, she was also used for the first time in the season with which she took third place. This was followed by Strelenko's most successful World Cup weekend in Pokljuka . The Russian finished second behind Magdalena Forsberg in the sprint and achieved her best ever World Cup result. In the pursuit, she fell back to twelfth place, but won the relay race with Achatowa, Kuklewa and Svetlana Ischmuratowa . In the further course of the season, a second place followed with the relay in Antholz . The highlight of the season were the Biathlon World Championships 2000 in Oslo, where Strelenko was used in the individual and ran to 20th place.

After another good start to the following season with an eighth place in the individual, an eleventh place in the sprint and fourth place with the Russian relay, another good season followed with several results in the points. After 29th place in the previous season, she came 35th in the overall ranking of the World Cup this season. In Pokljuka she took part in the Biathlon World Championships in 2001 and was again only used in singles, which she finished in 15th place. The 2001/02 season was less successful for Strelenko . It was only used at the sixth World Cup station in Antholz and only placed 28th in the pursuit in one race. Even with the season she reached a sixth place, which is less good for Russian claims. The 2003 European Biathlon Championships in Forni Avoltri , where the Russian was 18th both in the sprint and in the pursuit, ended her international career .

On January 13, 2011, Marija Strelenko died of cancer.
