The Holmenkollen is a 371  meter (moh) high mountain northwest of the Norwegian capital Oslo . The residential area Holmenkollen is located on the southern slopes of the mountain and belongs to the Vestre Aker district . With the construction of the Holmenkollbanen in the late 19th century, the area was opened up for settlement and tourism. Today the train is part of the Oslo Metro and connects the districts around the Holmenkollen with the capital.

Sports facilities

The area at Holmenkollen has long been used by the Oslo population as a sports facility for recreational and professional athletes.

The Holmenkollbakken is considered to be the oldest ski jumping hill in the world and is the most visited tourist attraction in Oslo. The first competitions were held in 1892. Only a few hundred meters from Holmenkollbakken, on the other side of the biathlon and cross-country skiing stadium, is the Midtstuen ski jumping facility with a total of five ski jumps .

So far, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1930 , 1966 , 1982 and 2011 have been held at Holmenkollen .

The biathlon and cross-country skiing stadium, whose shooting range and start and finish area are located between Holmenkollbakken and Midstuen, encompasses many kilometers of trails that extend into the forests of the Marka to the north . The biathlon world championships in 1986 , 2000 and 2016 were held there. Parts of the Biathlon World Championships in 1990 and 1999 were organized as part of the World Cup because they could not be held in Minsk or in Kontiolahti due to the weather conditions . In 2002 - also as part of the World Cup races - a mass start world championship was held, as these competitions were not yet part of the program for the 2002 Winter Olympics .

The Nordic competitions of the 1952 Winter Olympics also took place at Holmenkollen.

Ski museum

The ski museum on Holmenkollen is located directly at the ski jump. It was founded in 1923 and is the oldest ski museum in the world.

chapel

The chapel on Holmenkollen was built in 1903. After being destroyed by arson in 1992, the building was rebuilt. In 1996 the new chapel was consecrated.
