The Korketrekkeren ( German : the corkscrew ) is a former temporary artificial ice bob run and a natural toboggan run in the Norwegian capital Oslo , which was built in the local recreation area Frognerseteren .
Tobogganing on the streets of the region began as early as the 1880s. With the European Luge Championships in 1937 , an international competition took place here for the first time.
A bobsleigh track was installed for the 1952 Winter Olympics , the curves were built in the snow and then frozen to ice due to the low temperatures. The first test runs were made in 1951. On the second day of the competition, the track had to be slowed down by applying snow because there had been many accidents up until then. After the games, the bobsleigh track was no longer used.
In luge, the first ever Luge World Championships took place on the Korketrekkeren in 1955, where the Norwegian Anton Salvesen won the first and so far only world championship medal for Norway in a single seater.
Olympic track
The start of the bobsleigh run at the 1952 Winter Olympics was in Frognerseteren at an altitude of 429.2 meters above sea level . NHN . A difference in altitude of 124.35 meters had to be completed to the finish. The track had an average incline of 8.6 percent, this varied between 3.67 and 13.86 percent. The track had a total length of 1,507.5 meters and consisted of 13 curves with radii between 14 and 50 meters. After the finish line, it went steeply uphill. The track had three boxes for timekeepers, one at the start, one halfway and one at the finish. There was also a garage for the bobs at the start. 50 telephone lines were laid on the track to ensure that the competitions ran smoothly and that the track conditions were good during them.
