The 36th Biathlon World Championships took place from February 3 to 11, 2001 in the Slovenian Biathlon Stadium Pokljuka .

In the following year, 2002, the Olympic Winter Games were the regular highlight of the season . Therefore, in 2002 only the not yet Olympic mass start was held as a world championship.
