The 53rd  Biathlon World Championships are from 8 to 19 February 2023 in the German Oberhof in the Thuringian Forest take place. On September 9, 2018, the country town prevailed against the Czech Nové Město na Moravě in the choice of the venue at the Congress of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) in Poreč with 28:21 votes. The competitions are to be held in the LOTTO Thuringia ARENA on the Rennsteig . In the election for the 2020 World Cup, the Thuringians were subject to the South Tyrolean municipality of Antholz . After the 2004 biathlon world championships , Oberhof will host the title fights for the second time. The last biathlon world championships in Germany took place in Ruhpolding in 2012 . The city administration expects a turnover of 50 to 60 million euros . The state of Thuringia wants to provide 15 million euros for necessary investments.

The LOTTO Thuringia ARENA on the Rennsteig is to be rebuilt and expanded for the world title fights . Lines are being rebuilt and renewed for around EUR 24.5 million. The start area and the penalty loop will be moved. The "Frankfurter Kreuz" is deleted from the route plan due to several falls in the steep curve. In addition, there will be an expansion of the audience capacity by 4,000 to 28,000 visitors and two new functional buildings. Furthermore, a 75 meter long tunnel is to be created that will lead the athletes into the stadium. Work started in autumn 2019. A conversion would have been necessary even without the World Championships, as the IBU certificate for the facility expired in 2019.

Construction work began on September 17, 2019 with the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony . The system should be operational under World Cup conditions until the Biathlon World Cup in 2022. Construction costs of 26.2 million euros are assumed.
