The biathlon world championships for men and women were held in different locations in 1985 .
The 21st men's biathlon world championships took place from February 12 to 17, 1985 in Ruhpolding in the Federal Republic of Germany .
The 2nd women's biathlon world championships were held together with the junior world championships from February 20 to 25, 1985 in the Swiss community of Egg am Etzel .
In the previous year, instead of the World Championships, the Olympic Winter Games took place in Sarajevo . In 1984 there was a biathlon world championship only for women, as their competitions were not yet Olympic. A women's biathlon world championship was held for the first time in 1984.
