In the 1980s, Grønlid was one of the most successful representatives of women's biathlon. In contrast to many other athletes, she was successful in both the biathlon world cup and world championships .

After the victory of her two teammates Gry Østvik and Mette Mestad , Sanna Grønlid was the third Norwegian in the 1984/85 season in the third season to win the overall World Cup. In the previous season 1983/84 and the following season 1985/86 Grønlid was second, in the season 1986/87 third of the overall World Cup. This made Grønlid the first athlete to place in the top three athletes in the overall standings for four consecutive seasons.

Grønlid was world champion twice: in 1985 she won the sprint race in Egg am Etzel , and in 1987 the individual race in Lahti . In addition, the Norwegian achieved two silver medals in the sprint ( 1984 ) and individual (1985) and a bronze medal in the individual ( 1986 ).
