Sandrine Bailly (born November 25, 1979 in Belley , France ) is a former French biathlete .
Career
Sandrine Bailly started biathlon at the age of 15, having previously practiced cross-country skiing. At the age of 20, she contested her first World Cup race in Lahti in April 2000 and, completely surprisingly, won the individual competition in Antholz , only the third race of her career.
Bailly celebrated her first successes in 2003 when she won two world championship medals at the biathlon world championships in Khanty-Mansiysk . After the German Martina Glagow was awarded the gold medal and Bailly the silver medal in the pursuit race after a very tight sprint to the finish , the IBU later declared two athletes to be winners for the first time in World Cup history. Six days later, Bailly also won the bronze medal in the mass start. Over the years she has been able to improve steadily and in her third season in 2002/03 she was ranked 6th for the first time among the ten best athletes in the overall ranking.
The 2004/05 season turned out to be the most successful World Cup season in the Frenchwoman's career to date. Bailly was able to win a total of six World Cup races, all three of which were held in Pokljuka at the end of February. In none of the races included in the World Cup ranking was she worse than 17th. This was the basis for winning the overall World Cup, which she secured at the end of the season with 847 points and thus 14 points ahead of the German Kati Wilhelm . After Anne Briand and Emmanuelle Claret in 1995 and 1996, this is the third time a French woman has achieved this.
Despite many successes, Sandrine Bailly also experienced some setbacks and disappointments. At the Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen in 2005 , she was one of the favorites as the leader in the overall World Cup, but in the end she still didn't win a medal. In the sprint and individual races as well as with the French relay, she took the ungrateful fourth place. She also did not achieve an individual medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . She won her first ever Olympic medal with the bronze medal in the French relay.
The 2006/07 season was comparatively less successful for the Frenchwoman. Although she achieved a sprint victory in Ruhpolding and two second places in Oberhof and Hochfilzen and finished 8th in the overall World Cup at the end of the season, this was her worst placement since the 2001/02 season. Although Bailly broke her hand in preparation for the 2007/08 season, she still got off to a successful start this season. At the first World Cup in Kontiolahti she was among the top ten athletes in all three races, a week later she won both the sprint and the subsequent pursuit race in Hochfilzen, Austria. At the World Championships in Östersund, she could not build on her performance in the individual competitions. With the women's relay, however, she managed to win the bronze medal when she was able to catch up with the favored Yekaterina Jurjewa as the final runner on the last lap and secure the medal for her country. At the end of the season at the Holmenkollen in Oslo, the battle for the overall ranking in the World Cup was decided in the last three races . Sandrine Bailly, who was just in the lead, was able to prevail against Andrea Henkel , but had to let Magdalena Neuner overtake thirteen points behind.
Together with Marie Dorin , Sylvie Becaert and Marie-Laure Brunet , Bailly won the silver medal in the relay competition of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
Private life
Her sister Anne Lise was also a biathlete, her brother Sylvain is a cross-country skier. For a long time Sandrine Bailly was in a relationship with the French biathlete Ferréol Cannard , from whom she has since separated again. She currently lives in the French community of Ruffieu . She gave birth to her daughter on October 14, 2011.
