Rule changes

The Executive Committee of the International Biathlon Union decided at a meeting on 19/20. May 2007 Changes to the qualification system and the participation rates for the World Cup events and the World Championships, which also have an impact on the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver : It will be for the World Cup and the "Open European Cup", the successor to the Biathlon European Cup New "IBU points system" introduced, which is run parallel to the previous World and European Cup ratings. The qualification and participation quota system based on the nation ranking still applies to the 1st World Cup weekend 2007/08 - from the second World Cup weekend the new points system will be used to limit the fields of participation to a maximum of 93 athletes.

Before the season

GermanyGermany Germany

In the German team, there were initially changes to the positions of assistant coaches for the new season. For the men, Mark Kirchner replaced the former co-national coach Fritz Fischer, who had resigned for health reasons . The women's assistant coach Harald Böse , who retired for reasons of age, replaces Gerald Hönig . Kirchner, who had previously supervised course group 1b, is primarily supposed to supervise youth work at the Ruhpolding base . Remo Krug is now in his old position . Hönig was previously the coach of the German women's C-team and is now the responsible base coach in Oberhof . Peter Sendel takes over his old position . The women’s performance group 1b is looked after by Markus Fischer . Franz Bernreiter trains the men's C-squad . The responsible national coach will remain Frank Ullrich for the men and Uwe Müßiggang for the women.

The men's A-squad consists of Michael Greis , Michael Rösch and Andreas Birnbacher , complemented by the B-squad athletes Alexander Wolf and Christoph Stephan . These five athletes form performance group 1a and initially have a permanent right to start. The other two racing pitches will each be filled with athletes from performance group 1b, consisting of Daniel Graf , Christoph Knie , Carsten Pump , Norbert Schiller , Robert Wick , Jörn Wollschläger , Toni Lang , Sebastian Berthold , Daniel Böhm and the B2 squad athlete Steve Renner exists. The women's performance group 1a consists of the A-team athletes Martina Glagow , Andrea Henkel , Kati Wilhelm , Magdalena Neuner and Kathrin Hitzer , as well as the B-team athletes Simone Denkinger and Juliane Döll . Performance group 1b includes Jenny Adler , Sabrina Buchholz , Ute Niziak , Carolin Hennecke and the B2 squad athletes Anne Preußler and Stephanie Müller .

FinlandFinland Finland

In late October 2007 Finland announced the teams for the upcoming season. Four men and four women were named, who are looked after by the trainers Jonne Kähkönen , Vesa Hietalahti and Asko Nuutinen . The women's team is made up of Kaisa Mäkäräinen , Mari Laukkanen , Susanna Porela and Kaisa Varis , the men's team is made up of Timo Antila , Jarkko Kauppinen , Jouni Kinnunen and Marko Mänttäri . Kaisa Varis ran her first season after switching from cross-country skiing and a doping ban, but was banned for life as a repeat offender on the fringes of the World Cup after a positive doping result in early 2008.

FranceFrance France

France called up their squad for the new season in late April 2007. After Raphaël Poirées retired, the men's A-squad includes the athletes Vincent Defrasne , Simon Fourcade , Ferréol Cannard , Julien Robert and Loïs Habert . Despite his resignation, Robert will start at the end of last season. Although he is not the strongest athlete on the team, he should act as the team's integration and leadership figure. The B-squad consists of Vincent Jay , Vincent Porret , Tanguy Roche , Alexis Bœuf , Frédéric Jean and Arnaud Langel . To succeed Jean-Paul Giachino as head coach, Bruno Clément , the previous assistant coach of the women, was initially in discussion - on May 1, however, he announced his departure from coaching. The new head coach for the men will be Stéphane Bouthiaux , the new shooting coach will be the ex-head coach Jean-Paul Giacchino. The women's A-squad that Lionel Laurent trains includes Sandrine Bailly , Sylvie Becaert and Delphyne Peretto . Florence Baverel-Robert and Christelle Gros , who resigned after last season, left a big gap in the women's team. Marion Blondeau , Pauline Macabies , Anaïs Bescond , Marie-Laure Brunet , Marie Dorin and Marine Rougeot belong to the B-squad that should be recommended for the World Cup . France is predicted to have a tough season after the massive bloodletting. Nevertheless, there are several young athletes in the team with a lot of potential, such as Fourcade and Habert for the men and Macabies and Blondeau for the women.

ItalyItaly Italy

Italy's team captain is Paolo Riva , who is primarily responsible for the A and B squads for both men and women. At his side is Francesco Berlendi's A-Team coach and Alexander Inderst for the B-Team. The men's A-Team consists of René-Laurent Vuillermoz , Christian De Lorenzi and Markus Windisch , the B-Team consists of Mattia Cola , Armin Kasslatter , Christian Martinelli , Claudio Mussner and Nicola Pozzi . The women's A team is made up of Michela Ponza , Roberta Fiandino , Karin Oberhofer and Katja Haller , and the B team includes Barbara Ertl , Michela Andreola and Renate Zingerle .

CanadaCanada Canada

The Canadian team starts with five men and two athletes. In the men's category , Robin Clegg , Jean-Philippe Leguellec , Jaime Robb , François Leboeuf and Patrick Côté were nominated - apart from Clegg, rather blank pages of biathlon. The women are going into the new season with the draft horse Zina Kocher , Sandra Keith is also part of the squad .

NorwayNorway Norway

Traditionally, on April 19, 2007, the Norwegian coaches were the first nation to call their squad for the 2007/08 season. The men's coach at Alf Koksvik , Kjell Ove Oftedal , Joar Himle and Torgeir Bjørn appealed Frode Andresen , Lars Berger , Ole Einar Bjørndalen , Stian Eckhoff , Hans Martin Gjedrem , Halvard Hanevold , Alexander Os , Magne Thorleiv Rønning and Emil Hegle Svendsen in the nine-member A -Cadre. The coaches hope that this will create a lot of competition. The B-squad includes Anders Bratli , Rune Brattsveen , Martin Eng , Ronny Hafsås , Henrik L'Abée-Lund and Stian Nåvik . Egil Gjelland was not appointed after weaker performance , who therefore retired from active competitive sport.

The women's trainers Audun Svardal and Geir Ole Steinslett called Tora Berger , Liv-Kjersti Eikeland , Ann Kristin Flatland , Anne Ingstadbjørg , Jori Mørkve , Julie Bonnevie-Svendsen and Gro Marit Istad-Kristiansen into their seven-member A-squad , but they did so on May 3rd surprisingly declared her resignation. The B-squad includes Kari Henneseid Eie , Eline Fannemel , Kjersti Isaksen , Anne Mørkve and Solveig Rogstad . Svendsen rose due to her good performance in the junior division in the A-squad and replaced Linda Grubben there . As in the previous season, Gunn Margit Andreassen will not train with the rest of the squad in order to have more time for her son and will probably contest her last season.

AustriaAustria Austria

The Austrian national team consists exclusively of male athletes: Ludwig Gredler , Daniel Mesotitsch , Fritz Pinter and Christoph Sumann . Among them are the athletes of the A-squad: Tobias Eberhard , Julian Eberhard , Simon Eder , Sven Grossegger , Dominik Landertinger , Daniel Salvenmoser , Andreas Schwabl , Andreas Zelzer and the only woman Iris Waldhuber . More women will follow in the C-squad.

The head coach Alfred Eder , the co-trainers Walter Gapp and Walter Hörl , masseur Stefan Rohrmoser, ÖSV doctor Peter Baumgartl and sports director Markus Gandler are the best-known supervisors of the Austrian biathlon team who worked on the doping incidents at the Olympic Games from Turin, were suspended and are no longer allowed to carry out their duties. This approach causes lasting problems in the Austrian team during the preparation for the season.

RussiaRussia Russia

It was eagerly awaited whether the head of the association, Alexander Tichonow , would carry out his threats and dismiss the two national coaches, but men's coach Wladimir Alikin could point to a successful preseason, and Valery Polchowski's women's team had expected one due to the lack of several athletes (baby breaks, doping bans) weak season. The Russian Federation, which is also ready to give in to the premium dispute that smoldered in the preseason, replaced Polchowski on May 24th due to the "bad mood in the team" by Alexander Selifonov - the decision was not recognized by the Russian Sports Federation, so that Polchowski also remains in office.

The two Russian national coaches called their squads on April 24th, which were confirmed by the association on May 24th. Alikin appointed Sergei Roschkow , Nikolai Kruglow , Maxim Tschudow , Ivan Tscheresow , Dmitri Yaroshenko , Andrei Makowejew , Filipp Schulman and Alexei Tschurin . Polchowski called Albina Achatowa and Olga Saizewa , who returned to the squad after their baby breaks. Natalja Gussewa , Tatjana Moissejewa , Anna Bulygina , Anna Bogali-Titowez , Jekaterina Jurjewa and Swetlana Slepzowa , who impressed with her good performances at the 2007 season end and at the Junior World Championships, also belong to the squad. Maxim Maximow , Jana Romanowa , Jekaterina Schumilowa and some other starters have to prove themselves in other competitions, but they can also qualify for the team again. It can be particularly critical for the 35-year-old Roschkow, as the association is actually aiming for rejuvenation.

SwedenSweden Sweden

In Sweden, Wolfgang Pichler remains the responsible trainer for the men's and women's teams. Cross-country skier Jörgen Brink is switching from cross-country skiing to biathlon.

SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland

The Swiss contingent is led by Matthias Simmen . The men's A team also consists of Simon Hallenbarter and Ivan Joller . Then there is the B-team, which includes Claudio Böckli and Thomas Frei . Among the women, whose team is still under construction, there is only one B-team this season, which consists of Selina Gasparin and Caroline Kilchenmann .

Czech RepublicCzech Republic Czech Republic

The new coach will be Michal Šlesingr and Ondřej Moravec's previous personal trainer , Vlastimil Vávra Senior . He succeeds Milan Janoušek , who is now assistant coach.

UkraineUkraine Ukraine

Ukraine's squad for the season consists of well-known senior athletes and new athletes. The men's team consists of eleven athletes: Oleksij Ajdarow , Oleksandr Batjuk , Oleh Bereschnyj , Oleksandr Bilanenko , Andrij Derysemlja , Vyacheslav Derkach , Vitaly Kiltschyzkyj , Vitaly Koschuschko , Oleksiy Korobejnikow , Roman Pryma and Serhij . The women's team also consists of eleven starters: Oxana Chwostenko , Oxana Jakowljewa , Lilija Wajhina-Jefremowa , Nina Karassewytsch , Olena Pidhruschna , Tetjana Rud , Walentyna Schestak , Lyudmyla Schyber , Walentyna Semerenko , Wita Semerenko and Inna Suprun .
