The Biathlon World Cup 2006/07 was a series of competitions in biathlon , which consisted of 27 individual and 5 relay races for men and women and was held at nine venues. In addition to the nine World Cup events in Östersund , Hochfilzen (two events), Oberhof , Ruhpolding , Pokljuka , Lahti , Oslo ( Holmenkollen ) and Chanty-Mansiysk , the biathlon world championships held in Antholz , Italy, were also included in the World Cup ranking. During the season, athletes from 39 national associations took part in World Cup events, 36 for men and 34 for women. Michael Greis won the overall world cup for men ahead of Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Raphaël Poirée , and for women Andrea Henkel won ahead of Kati Wilhelm and Anna Carin Olofsson . In the men's standings, Russia won ahead of Germany, while Germany placed ahead of Russia for women.

Seasonal conclusion

The 2006/07 season was dominated by a very mild winter with little snow in Europe, the narrow snow bands in the green landscape, in sometimes almost summery conditions, offered a picture that hardly reminded of winter sports - when the pursuit on December 9th in Hochfilzen was wearing Ole Einar Bjørndalen even wore swimming trunks over his racing suit after the sprint was held the day before at 19 ° C in summer. In the biathlon, however, in contrast to many other winter sports, no World Cup race had to be canceled, only the races originally planned in Osrblie were held in Hochfilzen as an alternative.

However, some of the events were only possible with unconventional methods: in addition to artificial snow , which was produced with snow cannons on the few cold nights in advance , a lot of snow from sometimes distant, high-altitude regions was used to prepare the slopes - to ensure the World Cups in Oberhof were used in addition to cooling tents, which ensured the sub-zero temperatures required for the snow cannons, and even 3,600 cubic meters of crash ice from Bremerhaven .

New faces

The outstanding newcomer was Magdalena Neuner with 7 victories this season, including the two world championship titles in Antholz. She became the youngest three-time world champion in the history of biathlon. In her first season she finished fourth in the overall World Cup. However, she competed in a few races in the preseason. Her team colleague Kathrin Hitzer was only a little behind her . She reached three podium places and was tenth overall in the World Cup. Other starters like Jori Mørkve , or Helena Jonsson and Oxana Chwostenko , who both celebrated their first World Cup victories, were able to attract attention for the first time this season.

There was no “high flyer” like a nine or a Hitzer for women in the men's area. However, several younger athletes such as Dmitri Jaroshenko , Hans Martin Gjedrem , Tim Burke and Christoph Stephan made their breakthrough into the extended world elite. Also Andreas Birnbacher , who at the World Championships in Antholz the silver medal in the mass start won, closed permanently on the world leaders.

Resignations of the season

After the end of the biathlon season, several of the most famous athletes ended their careers. Already after the successful World Championships, the Norwegian Linda Grubben resigned, although she was promising in the overall World Cup. In addition to the French Florence Baverel-Robert and Christelle Gros , the German Katrin Apel also ended her career after 16 years of competitive sport. Also Irina Malgina ended her career after she was no longer appointed to the Russian A-team for the new season. At the end of May 2007, the 1998 Olympic champion Ekaterina Dafowska also announced her resignation, as she was unable to fully recover from a shoulder operation in the summer of 2006. Further career ends : Pauline Jacquin and Lenka Faltusová .

In the men's category, Raphaël Poirée , Sven Fischer and Ricco Groß, three of the most successful biathletes of all time, stepped down. Added to this is the resignation of the former world champion from Italy, Wilfried Pallhuber, and that of Sergei Tschepikow , who became Olympic champion in 1988. During the season, Pavel Rostovtsev also ended his career, but he did not contest any more races this season. Together with his wife Florence, Julien Robert also resigned. In addition, the assistant coach of the German women, Harald Böse , and the assistant coach of the German men, Fritz Fischer , ended their coaching activities in the national team after the season.
