The 1996/97 Biathlon World Cup was a series of biathlon competitions that consisted of 20 individual, five relay and two team races for men and women and was held at nine venues. In addition to the eight World Cup events in Lillehammer , Östersund , Oslo ( Holmenkollen ), Oberhof , Ruhpolding , Antholz , Nagano and Novosibirsk , the Biathlon World Championships were held in Osrblie , Slovakia . Sven Fischer won the overall world cup for men ahead of Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Wiktor Maigurow , and for women Magdalena Forsberg won ahead of Uschi Disl and Simone Greiner-Petter-Memm .
