Katja Wüstenfeld , born as Katja Beer , (born October 10, 1976 in Dohna ) is a former German biathlete who grew up in Zinnwald .
Career
The father Manfred Beer is a former successful biathlete. It was through him that Katja came to biathlon in 1994, after she previously competed as a gymnast. Her sister Romy Beer is also a biathlete.
Katja Wüstenfeld was a permanent member of the German national biathlon team for several years. Due to a mishap, however, she was denied participation in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . In the elimination race against Martina Zellner , the firing pin of her rifle broke. In the following years she had difficulties to qualify for the national team, especially at the respective international championships, due to the number of starters per nation within the strong German women's national team, she was repeatedly denied participation. Before the start of the 2006/07 season , she ended her career when, with Kathrin Hitzer and Magdalena Neuner, two promising young athletes moved up into the national squad and she was no longer guaranteed a starting place for the World Cup races.
Katja Wüstenfeld works for German customs , where she was promoted during her biathlon career. After retiring from competitive sports, she began studying for a Bachelor's degree in International Business (Department of Economics ) at the HTW Dresden . Since 2007 Katja Wüstenfeld has also been working as a co-commentator alongside Sigi Heinrich on biathlon broadcasts on the sports broadcaster Eurosport . She is married to the former biathlete Jan Wüstenfeld .
