Ursula "Uschi" Disl (born November 15, 1970 in Bad Tölz ) is a former German biathlete . She was one of the first internationally successful German biathletes and made a significant contribution to the increasing popularity of this sport. After the end of her career and a year of maternity leave, Disl worked as a TV expert at ARD during the 2007/08 and 2008/09 biathlon world cup seasons .
Private life
Disl lives in Mora ( Sweden ), together with Thomas Söderberg, a ski technician from Sweden who works for the Norwegian team and with whom she has a daughter and a son. In addition to the biathlon activity, she was an officer at the Federal Border Police , today's Federal Police , which gave her the opportunity to train for her sport.
Biathlon career
Beginnings
Uschi Disl switched from cross-country skiing to biathlon in the winter of 1986/87. Just three years later, she became Junior World Champion with the team in Finland. She competed in her first race at the World Cup in Ruhpolding in the 1988/89 season . Almost two years later - in the winter of 1990/91 - she was a permanent member of the German World Cup team. At the first World Cup in Les Saisies , she won the sprint in her fourth appearance in the World Cup and thus her first World Cup race, and she finished fourth in the overall World Cup. At the 1991 World Championships in Lahti , she won her first World Championship medal with a bronze medal in the relay race, and at the German Championships she won the individual competition over 15 km.
Successful years
At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , women's biathlon was an Olympic discipline for the first time. Uschi Disl won the silver medal with the German relay and thus her first Olympic medal.
Olympic Games in Nagano
After two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Games, Uschi Disl's goal was to win a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan . In the individual race on February 9, 1998, Disl was on course for victory with three faultless shots, fell back due to a mistake in the last shooting and finally achieved the bronze medal. In the sprint race that took place six days later, Disl was second behind the Russian Galina Kuklewa, 0.7 seconds behind . Uschi Disl was able to complete her set of medals with the gold medal in the final relay race, which she won together with Martina Zellner , Katrin Apel and Petra Behle .
Uschi Disl was able to end the 1997/98 season with two wins in Hochfilzen, Austria, so she was second in the overall World Cup again behind Magdalena Forsberg.
Single triumph in Hochfilzen
At the 2005 World Championships in Hochfilzen, she achieved two individual titles. In the sprint race, Disl achieved the first individual success of her career with a faultless shooting performance and a lead of 3.5 seconds over Russian Olga Saizewa . In the pursuit race, she fought a duel with the Chinese Liu Xianying until the end , which she won with a 17.9 second lead. Uschi Disl was able to conclude the last regular world championships of her career 14 years after winning her first world championship medal in addition to the long-awaited two individual gold medals with a silver medal in the relay race. This made her the most successful athlete at these world championships.
The last season
The 2005-06 season was Uschi Disl's final season. As in the previous year, she won the sprint race in Östersund at the start of the season, which was also the last World Cup victory of her career. Up to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , the fifth of her career, she impressed with consistent performance in the World Cup. The first Olympic races were less successful for Disl: In individual, sprint and pursuit races, she finished 12th, 34th and 10th. One of the consequences of this was that Disl was not used in an Olympic relay for the first time. So she was not involved in winning the silver medal. In the final mass start race on February 25, 2006 Disl was 6th after the last shooting; with the fastest final lap of all athletes, she was able to fight her way forward and won her ninth Olympic medal with the bronze medal.
On March 23, 2006 Disl announced her withdrawal from the Biathlon World Cup. The mass start race on March 26th at Holmenkollen in Oslo was her last World Cup start, she finished her career in fifth place in the overall World Cup. In 2008 doping allegations were made against Disl and other biathletes in the form of an anonymous complaint.
Balance sheet
Uschi Disl is one of the most successful biathletes at the Olympic Winter Games. She qualified a total of five times and won nine Olympic medals (2 × gold, 4 × silver, 3 × bronze), with at least one medal jumping out for her at every Olympic tournament. At world championships she won a total of 19 medals, two of which were individual gold medals at the Biathlon World Championships in 2005 in Hochfilzen and a total of 6 gold medals with relays or the team.
With fourth place in the overall World Cup 2003/04, after three second (1996, 1997, 1998) and three third places (1995, 1999, 2002), she was the best German biathlete over the entire season. Her total of 30 individual victories in the World Cup have so far only been exceeded in the women's biathlon by the Swede Magdalena Forsberg (42 individual victories), Magdalena Neuner (34 individual victories) and the Belarusian Darja Domratschawa (31 individual victories).
TV engagement
In the Biathlon World Cup seasons 2007/08 and 2008/09 Uschi Disl worked as an expert commentator for ARD . She mainly accompanied the women's races there, while Ricco Groß was responsible for the men's competitions. In this function, Disl and Groß replaced the former biathlete Magdalena Forsberg .
In February / March 2016 she took part in the VOX show Ewige Helden . On April 16, 2016, she took part in the ProSieben Völkerball Championship 2016 at ProSieben . On August 28, 2016, she was a participant in the VOX show The Super Olympian , where she competed and won against Panagiota Petridou in weightlifting.
In 2018 she took part in the RTL Ninja Warrior Germany celebrity special for the RTL donation marathon among a total of 26 participants .
