Jelena Bazewitsch is the "Honored Master of Sports" of the Soviet Union. She trained from 1979 in the youth sports club Костёр ( Funkenfeuer ) under B. Tichonow. In 1985 she started biathlon. She became Russian champion in 1986 and celebrated a World Cup victory in 1989 . The internationally most successful year of her career was 1990. At the Biathlon World Championships in 1990 she became two-time world champion. Together with Jelena Golowina , Swetlana Paramygina and Swetlana Dawydowa she won the team competition in Oslo. She was also successful with the USSR relay, with Bazewitsch, Golowina and Davydowa running to victory over the 3 × 7.5 km distance. Two weeks earlier in Minsk she had finished seventh in the individual over 15 km. Because of the snow conditions, the other competitions had been moved to Oslo.
Bazewitsch completed her studies at the Sports Сибирский государственный университет физической культуры и спорта (СибГУФК) ( Siberian State University of Physical Culture and Sports ) in Omsk in 1995 from. She is married and today bears the name Lukjantschuk. Bazewitsch lives in Omsk, where she works at the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the City Raion.
