The Vitebskaja Woblasz ( Belarusian Віцебская вобласць ; Russian Витебская область / Vitebskaja Oblast ) is an administrative district in northern Belarus . Capital of Woblasz is Wizebsk (whiteR. Віцебск ; russ. Витебск / Witebsk).

The Woblasz covers around 40,000 km² and has 1,321,100 inhabitants (2004), including many Russians . Many people were resettled in Vitebskaya Woblasz from areas in southern Belarus that were contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster .


The land area of ​​the Woblasz is 19.3%. 13.8% of the population of the republic live in this Woblasz. The area is divided into 21 districts, 249 village soviets, 19 cities (including 5 cities of regional subordination) and 26 urban settlements. The center is the city of Vitebsk with 367,000 inhabitants.
