Verkhnyadswinsk ( Belarusian Верхнядзвінск ; Russian Верхнедвинск ) is a city in Vitebskaya Woblasz in Belarus . It lies on the right bank of the Daugava and is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name . The city has 7900 inhabitants (2004).
history
The city was first mentioned as Drissa in 1386. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . Later Drissa came to the Russian Empire and in 1801 became the administrative center of a Ujezd of the Vitebsk Governorate .
In 1924 Drissa became the center of a Rajon. In 1962 the city and Rajon were renamed Verkhnyadswinsk. The old name corresponded to that of opening out at the city from the right into the Daugava river , which today is in Belarusian as in Russian about for Upper Dünastadt .
