Kaija Helinurm , until 1990 Kaija Parve , ( Russian Кайя Ахтовна Парве ; born June 14, 1964 in Tallinn ) is a former biathlete from the former Estonian Soviet Republic , today's Republic of Estonia . She started when she was active in the Soviet Union ; today she is an Estonian citizen. With seven world championship titles, she is one of the most successful biathletes ever.

Career

Parve started Nordic skiing in 1971 and switched to biathlon when the first biathlon world championships for women were planned in 1984. Her trainers were Helgi Kivi, Aita Pääsuke and Tõnu Pääsuke . She was one of the first successful athletes in this sport. At the 1984 World Championships , she was seventh in the sprint and fourth in the 10 km competition. During the season she won her first title at world championships with Wenera Tschernyschowa and Ludmilla Sabolotnjana , after which she won gold five times in a row with the Soviet season until 1988. Parve was also successful in the individual disciplines: in 1985 she became world champion in individual, and in 1986 in sprint. In addition, she won two silver medals in the sprint in 1985 and two individual silver medals in 1987 .

Parve had her best season in the World Cup in 1984/85 as third in the overall ranking. She was the first and, until the 1988/89 season, the only Soviet athlete to rank among the top three female athletes in the overall World Cup. Parve was named Estonian Sportswoman of the Year in 1985 and 1986, respectively .

In addition to the sports career

As early as 1982, she began training as a sports teacher at the Tallinn University of Education and completed it later. The first of her two daughters was born in 1989. In 1990 she married the Estonian athlete Marek Helinurm and took her husband's name. After the end of her sporting career, she took a job with the Estonian unemployment insurance. Her daughter Ulla-Maarit Helinurm is also an internationally successful biathlete.
