The 1st women's biathlon world championships took place in Chamonix , France , in 1984 . In the same year the Olympic Winter Games took place in Sarajevo , which is why no world champions were determined for the men . The public interest in women's biathlon was still very low at that time.

The Soviet biathlete Wenera Tschernyschowa was able to win both individual and sprint races . In addition, she was successful with the Soviet relay and became the most successful athlete with three gold medals. In the sprint race, the Austrian Andrea Grossegger won the first and to date only world championship medal for an Austrian biathlete. German athletes did not start at these world championships.
