Biathlon Mixed Relay World Championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Biathlon Mixed Relay World Championships were held in 2005 and 2006. In 2005, the IBU hosted its own World Championship for mixed relays, known as the Mixed Relay Championships , on a trial basis in Khanty-Mansiysk , Russia . In 2006, after the Olympic Games in Turin , the competition was held independently again as part of the World Cup in Pokljuka, Slovenia . With the 2007 World Championships in Antholz, the mixed relay was firmly integrated into the competition program of the World Championships. For the time being, the last edition of a world championship with only mixed races took place in 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia , as it was the only competition of the year that was not held at the Olympic Games. Since the mixed relay will be part of the Olympic program from 2014 , there will probably no longer be an independent mixed relay world championship.

In contrast to 2007, when men ran the usual relay length of 7.5 kilometers, in 2005 and 2006 all four runners in each relay had to cover a distance of 6 kilometers. The genders also alternated in the race, since 2007 women have been running first, followed by men. Otherwise the usual rules of international biathlon relay races applied.
