The 24th Biathlon World Championships took place in 1989 in Feistritz an der Drau and Pöllan in Austria . For the first time the world championships for men and women were held together.

For the first time, team competitions were also held. Here all four runners ran together. Everyone had to shoot once, the shooter ran any penalty loops alone. The other three team members had to wait for their colleague to finish shooting and taking penalties. Then all four ran together to the next shooting or to the target.

Since there was no snow in Feistritz / Drau during the World Championships, only the route was sparsely groomed with specially driven snow.

In the previous year there had been no biathlon world championships because of the Winter Olympics in Calgary . However, this only applies to men; biathlon was not yet on the Olympic program for women , so there were world championships for women in Chamonix .
