Inger Björkbom, along with runners like Eva Korpela , Mia Stadig , Sabine Karlsson and Anna Hermansson, belonged to the first generation of Swedish biathletes who, along with Soviet, Norwegian and, in some cases, Finnish athletes, were world leaders from the introduction of the World Championships in 1984 to the first Winter Olympics in 1992 in Albertville also female starters were allowed to participate. She started for biathlon Östersund IF .
Björkbom first took part in the 1986 world championships in his native Falun and won the silver medal there with Eva Korpela and Sabine Karlsson behind the Soviet relay, which was all powerful at the time. In the individual she also reached the top ten in tenth place, in the sprint the Swede came in 16th place. A year later she was able to defend the silver medal behind the Soviet Union and again in front of Norway in Lahti . Björkbom started the race, followed by Mia Stadig and Eva Korpela. In the individual she was 29. In 1988 the Norwegians placed in Chamonix ahead of the Swedes, who were third in the line-up of the previous year. The 1989 World Championships in Feistritz , where men and women held their world championships together for the first time , were less successful . Björkbom was 17th in the sprint and 21st in the individual race. In the relay race, she came in seventh with Sabine Karlsson and Mia Stadig after three successful years in the medal ranks. She placed one place better with Karlsson, Anna Hermansson and Stadig in the team competition, which was held for the first time. At the 1990 World Championships, which were held in Oslo as well as Minsk for weather reasons , Björkbom missed out on an individual medal against Petra Schaaf in fourth place. In the sprint she was 19th and again missed a medal in the relay race with Stadig and Hermansson in fifth place. The world title fights in 1991 in Lahti became the last world championships for the Swede. She reached 12th place in the individual and was fifth in the team race with Carolin Hilden and the twins Catarina and Christina Eklund . Participation in the Olympic biathlon competition for women in Albertville, which was held for the first time, became a career highlight. On the tracks of Les Saisies she was 26th in the sprint race, came 12th in individual and was sixth in the relay with Christina Eklund and Mia Stadig. In the World Cup, she was able to achieve top ten placements. After the games, she ended her career.
