The 26th Biathlon World Championships took place in Lahti from February 19 to 24, 1991 . The Finnish city hosted the men's and 1987 women's world championships as early as 1981 .

The highlight of the following season was the Winter Olympics in Albertville . World championships in 1992 were only held in team competitions because this discipline was not yet Olympic.
