Seija Hyytiäinen first appeared in Chamonix at the Biathlon World Championships in 1988 at an international championship and was 38th in the individual and 33rd in the sprint. A year later she was 29th in the sprint in Feistritz and fifth in the team race with Sari Kokko , Tuija Vuoksiala and Pirjo Mattila . Hyytiäinen achieved her greatest success in Oslo in 1990 when she won the bronze medal in the relay race alongside Tuija Vuoksiala and Pirjo Mattila. She was 29th in the individual, 24th in the sprint and seventh in the team race in the previous year. In 1991 Hyytiäinen started in Lahti in all four possible races. In the individual she was 14th, in the sprint 21st, in the team with Sari Lähde , Päivi Kallio and Tuija Sikiö seventh and with Johanna Saarinen and Tuija Sikiö relay eight. The Finn missed the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , where women's biathlon was first held. After the Biathlon World Championships in Borowetz in 1993 , where Hyytiäinen was tenth in the relay and in the team race. She was used regularly in the World Cup and repeatedly achieved good placements, including placements on the podium.
