Pirjo Aalto contested her first international race in the 1987/88 season in the World Cup . In her first race, she finished fifth with the Finnish relay. A year later she won, with Finland, the team race in the Finnish Hämeenlinna . From the 1989/90 season , the Finn started regularly in the World Cup. Here she reached the points several times, including a few top ten results. She achieved her second World Cup victory in 1990 with the relay in Antholz , Italy . The first international championship was the 1993 World Championships in Borowetz , where the Finn achieved her best international result with fourth place in the individual and just missed winning a medal. In the sprint she was 18th, with Tuija Sikiö , Seija Hyytiäinen and Mari Lampinen as the last runner in the relay as well as with Tuija Vuoksiala , Hyytiäinen and Lampinen in the team race tenth. The high point and the end of his career were the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , where Aalto finished 61st in the sprint.
