Joan Elizabeth Guetschow (born September 6, 1966 in Akron ) is a former American biathlete .

Joan Guetschow lives in Minnetanks . In her youth she practiced various sports - including swimming and triathlon - and did not specialize in cross-country skiing until 1986 during a one-year stay as an exchange student . That year she also took part in the Finnish triathlon championships and finished second behind Marjo Matikainen . Her first international biathlon championship was the 1991 World Championships in Lahti , where she was 16th in the sprint and seventh in the relay race with Mary Ostergren and Anna Sonnerup . In 1992 she was one of the athletes who first took part in women's biathlon races at the Olympic Games . In Albertville , Guetschow finished 64th at her only start, the sprint. She gave a better place because she ran in the wrong direction at times. At the World Championships in 1993 in Borovets , she reached the placements 29 in the individual and 64 in the sprint. With Joan Miller Smith , Mary Ostergren and Ntala Skinner , she finished eleventh in season. The last major event and the end of his career was the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . Guetschow was used in all three races. In the sprint, she finished 52nd, with Beth Coats , Joan Miller Smith and Laura Tavares finishing eighth. Her 17th place in the individual was for a long time the second best US result at the Olympics. In the World Cup she achieved points several times in her career.

Guechev is open to her homosexuality. She belongs to a relatively early group of female athletes who openly admitted to it. She is married to the American skeleton pilot Tricia Stumpf .
