Joan Miller Smith (* as Joan Smith on June 25, 1967 in Rochester ) is a former American biathlete . She started at two Olympic Winter Games , five Biathlon World Championships and took part in the Biathlon World Cup for more than ten years .

Joan Miller Smith lives in Honeoye Falls . She began biathlon in 1982 and has been a member of the US national team since 1985. Since the second half of the 1980s she took part in the World Cup. In Ruhpolding she was seventh in an individual in 1988 and thus reached the top ten for the first time. At the Biathlon World Championships in 1989 in Feistritz an der Drau , she was 36th in the individual and 33rd in the sprint. This was followed by the Biathlon World Championships in 1990 , some of which were relocated from Minsk to the Holmenkollen in Oslo due to poor weather conditions . Smith was first used in Oslo in the team race and was on the side of Patrice Anderson , Nancy Bell and Anna Sonnerup fourth placed, in the relay race she finished sixth with Anderson and Sonnerup. The next high point in his career was the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . At the competitions in Les Saisies she came in 55th place in the individual, was 21st in the sprint and with Nancy Bell-Johnstone and Mary Ostergren 15th in the relay. In the relay race of the Biathlon World Championships in 1993 in Borowetz Smith was with Joan Guetschow , Ostergren and Ntala Skinner eleventh. The American also achieved good results at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . In the individual she came 14th, in the sprint on the 24th and with Beth Coats , Laura Tavares and Guetschow in the relay race also the eighth place. After the Games , Smith achieved her best World Cup results in Canmore with a fifth place in the singles and a fourth place in the sprint. The last major event for Smith was the 1996 Biathlon World Championships in Ruhpolding. In the individual, she finished 53rd, was 39th in the sprint and came with Skinner, Kristina Sabasteanski and Stacey Wooley on a 14th place in the sprint race. In 1997 she competed in her last races in the World Cup.
