Canmore is a small town in Alberta , Canada . It is located just east of Banff National Park in the Bow Valley , about 110 km west of Calgary .

Canmore was officially named in 1884 by an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway . The first coal mine opened in 1887, and the coal industry was up until the closure of Canmore Mines Ltd. an important economic factor in 1979. Since then, tourism has become Canmore 's most important industry, not least because the cross - country skiing and biathlon competitions of the 1988 Winter Olympics were held at the Canmore Nordic Center .
