Chandra Crawford (born November 19, 1983 in Canmore , Alberta ) is a Canadian cross-country skier and Olympic champion in the Turin 2006 sprint competition . Her sister Rosanna Crawford is a biathlete .

Career

Crawford started the sport early and competed as a biathlete for five years between the ages of 11 and 16 before switching to cross-country skiing at 16 and gradually specializing in sprinting competitions, particularly outdoor style.

Crawford made her international debut with the start at the Junior World Championships 2001 in Szklarska Poreba . There she ran in the sprint on rank 27. From November 2001, the Canadian started in the cross-country Continental Cup . In her first two runs in Silver Star, however, she remained unsuccessful.

At the following Junior World Championship in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , she finished 12th in the sprint. Shortly afterwards Crawford ran at the Canadian Championships in 2002 in 16th place over 15 km and also over 10 km. After a mixed year in the Continental Cup , she managed only a poor 23rd place in the sprint at the 2003 Junior World Championship in Sollefteå .

After Crawford barely missed the medal ranks at the Canadian Championships 2004 in Charlo, New Brunswick over 5 and 10 km and in the sprint as fourth and fifth, she got a starting place in the C-squad as part of the Nor-Am Cup. After Crawford was able to improve her performance there, she made her debut in the cross-country skiing world cup on January 16, 2005 in Nové Město na Moravě . As 35th, however, she clearly missed the World Cup points ranks. In February in Reit im Winkl , Crawford did not get past 35th place in the sprint. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf , she finished 45th in the sprint. The mass start race over 30 km did not end for her. At the Canadian Championships in Prince George in 2005, Crawford secured her first national medal with silver in the 10 km pursuit.

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season Crawford managed to win World Cup points for the first time as 28th in Düsseldorf . In Vernon , she was tenth for the first time in the top ten. After finishing ninth in the Canmore team sprint, she even landed eighth in the Oberstdorf sprint.

At the Junior World Championship in Kranj in 2006 Crawford was again without a medal. In Davos , however, she was third on a World Cup podium for the first time. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she surprisingly won the gold medal in the sprint after running only on a disappointing 60th place in the skiathlon. After gaining further good points, she finished the season in 30th place in the overall World Cup ranking and 14th in the sprint ranking.

After a weak cross-country skiing World Cup in 2006/07 , in which she did not even finish in the top 10 at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo , she was able to improve significantly again for the cross-country skiing World Cup 2007/08 . So she started with a tenth place in Düsseldorf. On January 26, 2008 Crawford secured their first World Cup victory in Canmore . In March she was also successful in Lahti . At the Canadian Championships in 2008 in Callaghan Valley Crawford won silver over 5 and over 30 km. She finished the World Cup season in 23rd place overall and seventh in the sprint standings.

However, she could not withstand the pressure to perform. In the 2008/09 season she did not start at all in the World Cup and only at the beginning of winter for three races in the Nor-Am Cup. Back in the World Cup squad Crawford came for the 2009/10 season . However, at the beginning she only achieved acceptable results in the points ranks in Düsseldorf and Canmore. At the following Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 , she finished 26th in the sprint. Together with Daria Gaiazova , Perianne Jones and Madeleine Williams , she was also 15th in the relay.

At the following Canadian Championships in 2010 in Whitehorse Crawford won the sprint title for the first time. She also won bronze over 10 and 30 km. At the beginning of the following season 2010/11 she had to cancel the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo before she achieved a podium finish again in the team sprint in Düsseldorf with third place. In the individual World Cups she remained without further success. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo, the Olympic champion was again unable to win a medal.

Crawford achieved a significant increase in their performance again for the 2011/12 season . After finishing fourth in the Düsseldorf sprint, she finished second in Rogla, Slovenia . In the team sprint in Milano, she was third again on the podium with her team colleague. Crawford also secured two top placings at the Canadian Championships in 2012. So she won the title in the sprint as well as in the 30 km mass start race.

After another drop in performance, Crawford missed the qualification for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme . Despite the lack of success in the World Cup even after that, Crawford started at the age of 30 at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , where she finished 44th in the sprint race after she had already been eliminated in qualifying.

In March 2014, Chandra Crawford announced her retirement from active competitive sports.
