Marit Bjørgen (born March 21, 1980 in Trondheim ) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier . With 15 Olympic medals won, including eight gold, she is the most successful winter Olympic athlete to date . Furthermore, she was able to win 18 world titles. Due to her success, she is considered the most successful athlete in her discipline.

Career

Bjørgen had her first international success at the 1997 European Youth Olympic Winter Days in Sundsvall . There she won bronze over 7.5 km classic. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1999 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer , she won the bronze medal with the relay. In the classic 5 km race she came eighth. She ran her first cross-country skiing world cup in December 1999 in Engelberg and finished 39th in the sprint. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2000 in Štrbské Pleso , she won the bronze medal with the relay as in the previous year. In the individual races she came in 37th place over 5 km freestyle and 21st place in the sprint. In the 2000/01 season she got her first World Cup points in Engelberg with places 29 and 17 in the sprint. At the highlight of the season, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti , she ran to 24th place over 10 km classic and 19th place in the pursuit. The following year, in Salt Lake City , she won the silver medal with the relay in her first Olympic participation . In addition, she achieved 50th place in the 15 km mass start race and 14th place over 30 km classic. In March 2002 she reached her first podium in the World Cup in Falun with second place in the relay.

On October 26, 2002 Bjørgen won her first race, the sprint in Düsseldorf . She won her first gold medal at the 2003 World Championships in sprint races, and she added silver with the relay. Also in 2003, she won the Sprint World Cup for the first time. She repeated this success in the following three years. In November 2004 she won a race over a longer distance for the first time, a 10-kilometer run in Gällivare . At the 2005 World Championships she was the most successful female athlete ever; she became world champion in the team sprint (together with Hilde G. Pedersen ), over 30 km and with the relay; She won two further medals, silver and bronze, in the pursuit race and over 10 km. In addition, Bjørgen was in first place in the overall World Cup standings at the end of the 2004/05 season.

In 2005 she won the election for Norway's Sportswoman of the Year and the Aftenposten gold medal .

Before the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Bjørgen was one of the most popular favorites, but she couldn't live up to the high expectations. She suffered from the aftermath of bronchitis and had to give up the first race with stomach problems. Although she won the silver medal in the 10-kilometer run, there was no success in either of the sprint disciplines. The Norwegian relay team was also unable to win a medal for the first time since 1988.

A few weeks later, on March 4, 2006, Bjørgen rehabilitated with the victory of the Vasaloppet 45 km from Oxberg to Mora . In addition, she was again overall World Cup winner. At the 2007 World Championships she won the bronze medal in the team sprint (together with Astrid Jacobsen ) and with the relay.

At the beginning of February 2017 she became Norwegian champion in skiathlon and over 10 km classic in Lygna . In the same month she triumphed in Otepää over 10 km classic. At the highlight of the season, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , she won four gold medals. She became world champion in the 30 km mass start race, over 10 km classic, in the skiathlon and with the relay. In addition, she came in 16th place in the sprint. At the end of the season she won the 30 km mass start race in Oslo and took her 110th individual World Cup victory at the World Cup final in Québec with a seventh place and two stage wins. She finished the season in 15th place in the Sprint World Cup, fifth in the overall World Cup and second in the Distance World Cup. At the beginning of April 2017, she became Norwegian champion over 5 km freestyle and over 30 km classic in Gålå .

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Bjørgen took second place in the Ruka Triple. She won the classic 10 km race. This was followed by a victory in the pursuit race in Toblach . In January 2018 she became Norwegian champion in skiathlon, sprint and over 10 km freestyle in Vang . At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she won the 10 km freestyle and team sprint bronze medal with Maiken Caspersen Falla , the silver medal in the skiathlon and the gold medal in the 30 km mass start race and the relay team. In March 2018 she won the 30km mass start race in Oslo and the World Cup final in Falun. Asthma medication

Bjørgen took asthma medication for many years in her sporting career with the exception of the FIS. Justyna Kowalczyk therefore temporarily accused her of doping.

She lives with Fred Børre Lundberg , a former Norwegian Nordic combined skier, in Oslo and has a child born in 2015.
