Veronika Hesse , b. Schmidt, (born August 24, 1952 in Harzgerode ) is a former German cross-country skier who started for the GDR in the 1970s and early 1980s .

Career

Hesse, who started for SC Motor Zella-Mehlis , had her first international success at the 1974 World Championships in Falun . There she won the silver medal with the relay. In the 10 km run, she came in fifth. The following year she took third place with the relay at the Svenska Skidspelen and the Lahti Ski Games . At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , she won the bronze medal with the relay. In the individual races there she came in 12th place over 5 km and eighth place over 10 km. In March 1976 she won the Svenska Skidspelen with the relay and came second behind Barbara Petzold over 10 km. With the relay she came in second place in Lahti. The following year she took second place at the Svenska Skidspelen with the relay and at the Lahti Ski Games third place over 5 km, 20 km and with the relay. At the World Championships in 1978 in Lahti she ran on the 20th place over 10 km and on the eighth place over 20 km. In the 1978/79 season she won the World Cup in Štrbské Pleso over 20 km and took third place with the relay in Falun. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , she became a relay Olympic champion together with Carola Anding , Marlies Rostock and Barbara Petzold. In addition, she was eighth over 10 km and seventh over 5 km. In March 1980 she became world champion over 20 km at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun. She completed her last international races at the 1982 World Championships in Oslo . There she won the silver medal with the relay and took 20th place over 10 km, 14th place over 5 km and ninth place over 20 km. She won 27 medals at the GDR ski championships . She was champion four times over 5 km (1976, 1977, 1979, 1980) and three times with the relay of SC Motor Zella-Mehlis (1974, 1976, 1979) and over 10 km (1976, 1979, 1980).

In 1980 she was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit .
