Marie-Helene Östlund (born May 14, 1966 in Ed, Sollefteå as Marie-Helene Westin ) is a former Swedish cross-country skier .

Career

Westin, which started for the Sollefteå SK club and later for the Hudiksvalls IF club, made its international debut as part of the cross-country skiing world cup on March 15, 1986 in Oslo . With sixth place, she went straight to the top ten and collected her first World Cup points. At the beginning of the 1986/87 season in Ramsau am Dachstein , Val di Sole , Cogne and Calgary , she achieved good top 10 results.

At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , Westin took fifth place in the individual race over 10 km. Östlund also crossed the finish line in fifth place over 5 km. In the 20 km individual race, Westin surprisingly won the gold medal. Together with Magdalena Wallin , Karin Lamberg-Skog and Annika Dahlman , she also secured the bronze medal in the 4 × 10 km relay.

For this achievement she was later honored with the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal and won the radio sports Jerringpris . In addition, Westin secured their first World Cup victory with the world championship title, as the race was part of the official cross-country skiing world cup . At the end of the season she achieved another podium finish in Kavgolovo in third place.

Westin's most successful season was the 1987/88 season . She finished third in the World Cups in Reit im Winkl and Toblach . At the following Olympic Winter Games in Calgary in 1988 , she remained without a medal, but ran in all disciplines among the top ten. With the season she ran in sixth place. A little later, Westin won the last World Cup race in Rovaniemi and ended the season in second place in the overall World Cup standings. It was her first and only World Cup victory.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , Westin remained without a medal. She finished 13th over 10 km in classic style before she came 14th over 10 km in free style. In the 30 km individual run, Westin finished ninth.

In January 1991 Westin ran over 15 km in Klingenthal as second again on the podium in a World Cup race. At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme , Westin won the silver medal over 10 km in free style. After another successful year in the World Cup, in which Westin finished in the top 10 in all races, the Swede started in Albertville for her second Winter Olympics in 1992 . After mixed individual results, she took seventh place in the 4 × 10 km relay together with Carina Görlin , Magdalena Forsberg and Karin Säterkvist .

In 1993 she married the Swedish cross-country skier Erik Östlund and from then on entered as Marie-Helene Östland.

After another rather weak year, Östland came back on the road to success at the end of the 1993/94 season . So she landed over 5 km in Thunder Bay as seventh again among the top ten. At the beginning of the Cross-Country World Cup in 1994/95 , Östlund again impressed as a good top 10 runner.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 in Thunder Bay, Östlund had no chance of a medal in singles, but was able to win the bronze medal again with the relay before she finally ended her active career at the end of the season.

Östland is the sister of Håkan Westin .
