The 36th Nordic World Ski Championships were held from February 12 to 21, 1987 in Oberstdorf in the Oberallgäu district . Germany was therefore the third time, after Oberhof in 1931 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 (Olympic Games), organizers of Nordic World Ski Championships.
According to the organizer, almost 400,000 spectators attended the competitions.
As in earlier times, v. a. the Scandinavian countries Sweden, Norway and Finland . In cross-country skiing, the Italians surprised with two gold medals. On the other hand, as at the last World Cup, the Soviet Union was unable to build on the great successes of previous years, and the GDR did not win a single medal.
Entrusted with the implementation
In May 1983 Oberstdorf was awarded the contract for these world championships at the 34th FIS Congress in Sydney .
