Matjaž Zupan (born September 27, 1966 in Kranj ) is a Slovenian ski jumping trainer and former ski jumper .

He initially worked as an assistant coach under Heinz Koch for the Austrian national team. Since the 1999/2000 season he has been the coach of the Slovenian national ski jumping team. Zupan was 20 years ski jumper and reached the World Cup next to a 2nd place at the ski flying in Planica (1988) with the Yugoslav team also 2nd place in the team at the Olympic Games in Calgary.

Coach successes

As a coach, his team has regularly achieved good placements, such as the silver medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf on the normal hill in the 2004/05 season . Highlights were, for example, the successes of Peter Žonta in the 2003/04 season (3rd place in the Four Hills Tournament, top 10 placement in the overall World Cup) or the world championship title for Rok Benkovič in 2005 in Oberstdorf (normal hill). Zupan resigned after the 2005/06 season as the head coach of the Slovenian team, his successor was Vasja Bajc . Zupan looked after the Czech B-squad for two years, until it was announced in April 2008 that he would replace Bajc's successor Ari-Pekka Nikkola as head coach in Slovenia.

For the 2011/12 season , Zupan took over the French team as head coach and in April 2012 extended his contract in France until 2014. In 2014 he took over the Russian national team together with David Jiroutek .

In October 2017, Zupan took over the post of Bulgarian head coach from Alexander Pointner to prepare the team for the 2018 Winter Olympics .
