Rok Benkovič (born March 20, 1986 in Ljubljana , then Yugoslavia ) is a former Slovenian ski jumper .
Career
Benkovič made his international debut as part of the Ski Jumping Continental Cup for the 1999/2000 season. With 20 points he reached the 127th place in the overall ranking. He made his debut in the Ski Jumping World Cup on December 21, 2001 in Predazzo . In his second World Cup competition on the same hill on the day before, he won his first World Cup points with 26th place. Despite this success, he switched back to the Continental Cup four days later, where he was able to jump back into the top 20 straight away with 18th place in St. Moritz .
At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , he and Bine Zupan , Zvonko Kordež and Jaka Oblak won the bronze medal in the team competition behind the teams from Finland and Austria. In the individual competition on the normal hill he reached rank 24. At his first Continental Cup in Gallio he achieved a placement among the top ten for the first time with rank six. In the summer of 2002 he was able to improve his performance and achieved his first career podium with second place in Calgary. After another third place in jumping on the Utah Olympic Park Jumps in Park City , Benkovič moved permanently to the World Cup squad. Right from the start he showed a good performance with 16th place at the World Cup opener of the 2002/03 season in Kuusamo . As a result, however, he did not gain any further points, so that he left the World Cup squad again in December and returned to the Continental Cup in January 2003. He narrowly missed the podium in Seefeld in Tirol as fourth. After he achieved only mixed results in the other competitions, he achieved a second place in the FIS jumping in Villach and a victory in the junior jumping in the team in Planica . He then won the team's silver medal at the 2003 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Sollefteå . He also won silver in the individual on the normal hill. Only two weeks later he started in the senior division at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme, Italy . He reached sixth place with the team in the team competition. In the individual competitions, Benkovič jumped to places 23 and 31.
In March 2003 he returned to the World Cup. At the jumping in Oslo he jumped after a fifth place in the team world cup with the eighth place in the individual his so far best individual result in the world cup. After further good results and a 41st place in the overall standings, Benkovič started the summer season stronger. In Velenje he achieved a podium again with second place in the Continental Cup. In the ski jumping Grand Prix he was also on the podium with third place in the team competition in Hinterzarten . After further good results and a second place in jumping in Innsbruck , he finished the 2003 Grand Prix season in fourth place overall.
The 2003/04 season subsequently became his most successful World Cup season. In all competitions with three exceptions he was always within the points. In the end, he finished 17th in the overall World Cup ranking with 343 points. At the ski flying world championships in Planica in 2004 , he came in 21st place and was sixth with the team.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , he surprisingly won the gold medal in the competition on the normal hill. Up to this point he had not won a single World Cup competition. After Franci Petek in Predazzo in 1991 he is only the second Slovenian ski jumper to win a gold medal at world championships. With the team he won bronze on the normal hill.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Benkovič came 29th on the normal hill and 49th on the large hill. In the team competition he was tenth together with Robert Kranjec , Primož Peterka and Jernej Damjan .
After the Olympic Games, Benkovič never found his way back to the top of the world. In May 2007, at the age of only 21, Benkovič announced that he would end his career due to a lack of motivation and a lack of success.
