The first edition of the music competition Songs as beautiful as the north took place in the spring of 1990, after the Lower Saxony state government had invited composers and lyricists to a song competition to create new folk songs that deal with North German topics. The patron of the competition was the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Ernst Albrecht .

A jury selected 46 titles from 2,600 submissions, which were then presented to the public for election on the radio. 15 of these titles qualified for the final, which was broadcast live on March 8, 1990 by Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) on ARD from the Stadeum in Stade . Moderators were Dénes Törzs and Ramona Leiß . After the title was presented, TV viewers could vote for their favorites via TED .

At the end of the ranking, the Godewind group was the winner of the competition. Her song Regenbogenkinder was composed by GJ Ohl and written by J. Meyer. Albrecht presented the winners with a trophy in the form of a white jumping horse (" Lower Saxony horse ").

The 15 tracks in the finale appeared on a CD together with the title song of the TV show sung by the Northern Lights (music: Jean Frankfurter , text: Irma Holder ) .
