Band history

Occupation from 1979 to 1996

The group "Godewind" was founded in 1979. The founding members were

  • Ernst "Larry" Evers (born April 18, 1951 - † May 25, 2014)
  • Gerd Jürgen "Shanger" Ohl (born April 23, 1952)
  • Annegret Siemen (born May 16, 1957)
  • Henry Jansen († March 2014).

A short time later, Verena Hocke (* June 12) and Carsten Böhm (* January 30, 1945) also belonged. In 1984 Henry Jansen left the group. Heiko Reese (born October 30, 1971) joined in 1994. Verena Hocke left the group in the early 1990s. For this, Vera Binge came temporarily and from 1996 Andrea Krehky (* April 8, 1960 - February 11, 2004).

1979–1988: founding years, concerts

Evers and Ohl had founded the “Trio Albatros” together with Kay Wohlsen in 1976, which appeared in various discos in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1977 Evers had produced the single Arrival with the then 20-year-old high school student Annegret Behrend , a vocal version of the ABBA song of the same name . In 1978 the album Mien Moderspraak , sung in Low German, was produced with Annegret Behrend . In 1979 the new band received a record deal under the name "Godewind", whereupon the first album with songs sung in Low German was released.

In 1980 Godewind gave several Christmas concerts sung in Low German for the first time in northern German churches, which developed into a permanent tradition in the following years. Then came radio and television appearances, which made Godewind known beyond the borders of Schleswig-Holstein.

1988–2003: USA, GDR, competitions

In 1988 Godewind took part in a folk festival in Missouri , USA , as the representative of the Federal Republic of Germany . This was followed by a tour through the GDR lasting several weeks .

In 1990 the group Godewind won the first Lower Saxony competition " Songs as beautiful as the north " with the title Regenbogenkinder . Also in 1992 they were represented with Boot auf dem Strom and in 1993 with Nordic colors and reached 12th and 8th place respectively. At the end of 1990 Verena Hocke got a supporting role in the series Großstadtrevier . It acted there in the wake ferryman get Röver as a friend of the police officers Neidhart Köhler. Verena Hocke was replaced by Vera Binge, who was replaced by Andrea Krehky in 1996. In 1997 Godewind made a tour with country singer Trisha Yearwood .

2003–2007: DGzRS- "Bootschafter", changes in cast

In 2003, the band got involved as a "bootschafter" for the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS). The annually changing “Bootschafter” makes himself available for his term of office on a voluntary basis for advertising measures of the DGzRS, which is mainly financed by donations.

In the same year Carsten Böhm left the group again. Andrea Krehky died on February 11, 2004. She was found dead in a ditch filled with water near her home in Hemme / Dithmarschen after she had not returned from a walk.

Shortly after Andrea Krehky's death, Anja Bublitz (born September 21, 1969) became a new member of the group that was traveling as a sextet with Stephan “Borky” Bork (born April 3, 1958) during this time. After Annegret Siemen publicly announced her departure from Godewind on April 25, 2007, the group only performed with five musicians.

2007–2012: band anniversary, culture award

On August 9th, 2009 Godewind celebrated their 30th anniversary with a concert in the courtyard of Husum Castle with several ex-band members and friends such as Knut Kiesewetter , Klaus Büchner and Günter Willumeit . Godewind can be seen from time to time as a guest on various music programs on television. The focus, however, is still on the numerous live concerts, especially in northern Germany.

In October 2009 bassist Stephan Bork left the band. The new bass player was Sven Zimmermann (born December 12, 1966) from Kiel. Sven Zimmermann had already been working as a studio bassist for Godewind since 1996.

In 2012 Godewind received the North Frisian Culture Prize for Literature, Music and Art from the NOSPA Cultural Foundation.
