Songs as beautiful as the north was a song competition that was held between 1990 and 1993.

history

The Lower Saxony state government launched the competition with the aim of creating new folk songs that deal with North German topics. The patron of the competition was Prime Minister Ernst Albrecht in 1990 and 1991 .

15 titles each qualified for the final. In the 1990 competition, a jury selected 46 titles from 2,600 submissions, which were then presented to the public on the radio to choose the 15 finalists. For the 1991 to 1993 competitions, a jury selected the 15 finalists from numerous submissions.

The final of the competitions was broadcast live by Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) within ARD . After the title was presented, TV viewers could choose their favorite via TED.

The fifteen titles of the finales appeared together with the title song of the television show sung by the Northern Lights (music: Jean Frankfurter , text: Irma Holder ) each on a CD .

The song competition, sometimes also called the Grand Prix of the North , did not take place after 1993. The broadcast was only continued as an entertainment program in loose series by the NDR.
