The 44th Nordic World Ski Championships took place from February 18 to March 1, 2003 in Val di Fiemme . The winter sports region in Trentino was the venue for the second time after 1991 . 18 competitions were held, twelve of them in cross-country skiing , three in ski jumping and three in Nordic combined . The ski jumping competitions took place on the Trampolino dal Ben ski jumping facility in Predazzo .
There was a change in the competition program: The second team ski jumping on the normal hill, which was held for the first time in 2001, was canceled again. The women were able to complete their program again, including the 30 km cross-country skiing, which had to be canceled at the last world championships due to the cold.
The Norwegians , spoiled for success, were again the best nation at this World Cup with five gold and eleven other silver and bronze medals. Behind them, like the last World Cup, was Germany with three World Cup titles. Russia , on the other hand, fell significantly behind the results of previous World Championships and Olympic Games, which was mainly due to the not so strong cross-country skiers this time. The Pole Adam Małysz , who won both individual ski competitions, showed a very strong performance . In cross-country skiing, the Norwegian Thomas Alsgaard won an individual and a relay title. In the Nordic Combined, the German Ronny Ackermann was the best athlete with a gold and silver medal in the individual competitions as well as another second place with his team. Bente Skari from Norway , who was already very strong at previous World Championships , won two individual gold medals in cross-country skiing competitions. Kristina Šmigun from Estonia was also right at the front with one gold, two silver and one bronze.
