Lars Kristian Bystøl (born December 4, 1978 in Voss ) is a former Norwegian ski jumper and Nordic combined athlete .
Career
Bystøl began his winter sports career as a Nordic combined skier at national level and in the B World Cup. At the Norwegian Championships in 1997 he was able to occupy 9th place in the individual. A short time later he concentrated on ski jumping and was able to achieve his first successes both nationally and in the ski jumping World Cup from 2001 . In 2002 he won the bronze medal at the Norwegian Championship for the first time on the normal hill.
Lars Bystøl won bronze with the team at the 2003 World Championships in Val di Fiemme and bronze with the team from the large hill at the 2005 World Championships in Oberstdorf .
As a result, he gained a dubious reputation for his excessive consumption of alcohol . After falling into the harbor basin in Oslo / Aker Brygge in the summer of 2003 , he was downgraded from the World Cup team to the COC team. However, due to good athletic performance and an improvement in his lifestyle, he was allowed to return to the World Cup a year later.
On January 4, 2006, he won a World Cup competition for the first time in Innsbruck and thus achieved his first victory in an individual competition in the Four Hills Tournament . At the Ski Flying World Championships 2006 in Tauplitz he won the gold medal in the team ski flying. Lars Bystøl secured his greatest success in Pragelato at the 2006 Winter Olympics . There he became Olympic champion on the normal hill and on the large hill he won the bronze medal. He also won the bronze medal with the Norwegian team. In the post-Olympic season he was completely out of shape, and with 28th place was 76th in the overall World Cup.
In the spring of 2007, Bystøl was arrested again in Hemsedal after a drunken fight . This led to another exclusion from the A-team. However, the Norwegian Ski Association explicitly gave Bystøl the opportunity to return to the World Cup team with convincing sporting performances.
Due to his good results in the Continental Cup , he managed to return to the Norwegian national team in February 2008, before the Nordic Tournament . At the second competition in Kuopio, he made a brilliant comeback in the World Cup with 7th place, having finished 14th the day before.
In January 2009 he confirmed to the magazine Se og Hør that traces of the prohibited substance THC had been found in his urine in a doping test at the end of November 2008 and that he was thus convicted of cannabis consumption. He was then banned for four months. On September 22, 2009, Bystøl announced his official retirement from competitive sports.
