Kamil Wiktor Stoch [ ˈkamil ˈstɔx ] (born May 25, 1987 in Zakopane ) is a Polish ski jumper . At the 2013 World Championships he won the title on the large hill and won the bronze medal in the team competition with the Polish team. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Stoch secured both individual gold medals. At the 2018 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal in the individual on the large hill and the bronze medal with the team. He also won the overall World Cup and the Four Hills Tournament in 2013/14 and 2017/18 in 2016/17 , 2017/18 and 2020/21 . He is one of the five athletes (alongside Espen Bredesen , Thomas Morgenstern , Matti Nykänen and Jens Weißflog ) who have won the four most important competitions in ski jumping. Stoch was also the second overall winner of a Four Hills Tournament in 2017/18 after Sven Hannawald ( 2001/02 ), who won all four competitions.

After his overall victory in 2020/21, he is the third jumper after Bjørn Wirkola and Helmut Recknagel , who won the tour three times. Only Janne Ahonen (five wins) and Jens Weißflog (four wins) won more often.

Personal

Kamil Stoch attended the sports school Zespół Szkół Mistrzostwa Sportowego in Zakopane and then studied at the Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego im. Bronisława Czecha , a sports university based in Kraków .

Since August 8, 2010 he has been married to Ewa Bilan, who acts as his manager. Both founded a ski club in Zakopane to promote talent. Stoch also acted as an advertising medium for the Polish armed forces , because when he won the Olympic Games in 2014 he wore the emblem of the Polish Air Force on his helmet. Stoch is a fan of the English soccer club Liverpool FC , whose games he has often attended. He is an avowed Catholic.

Career

Kamil Stoch started skiing when he was three years old before he did his first jumps when he was nine. Three years later, at the age of twelve, he managed to jump to a distance of 128 m.

Stoch made his first appearance at an international tournament in 1999 at the pupil's cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In January 2003 it was used for the first time in the Continental Cup , the second division of international ski jumping. Here he also jumped in winter 2003/04 and at the beginning of winter 2004/05. In addition, Stoch represented Poland at the Junior World Championships from 2003 to 2005; In 2004 and 2005 he was junior vice world champion with the Polish team. At the 2005 World Championships in Oberstdorf , he finished sixth with the Polish team.

On January 29, 2005, Kamil Stoch was initially set up for a World Cup competition while jumping in his hometown Zakopane , but retired after the first round. On February 11th of that year he reached seventh place on the large hill in Pragelato, Italy, and got his first World Cup points. Shortly afterwards he was part of the Polish squad for the 2006 Winter Olympics . He jumped from the normal hill to 16th and from the large hill to 26th place. In team jumping he reached 5th place together with Stefan Hula , Robert Mateja and Adam Małysz .

On October 3, 2007, Kamil Stoch won the Summer Grand Prix jumping in Oberhof with the two best jumps. Shortly afterwards, on December 26, 2007, he became the winner of the Polish championship on large hill in Zakopane. On February 21, 2009 Stoch was fourth on the normal hill at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec, Czech Republic . On March 21, 2009, he and the Polish team won the silver medal in the World Cup in Planica, Slovenia . On January 29, 2011, he celebrated 3rd place in the team competition in Willingen .

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , Canada , Kamil Stoch reached 27th place in jumping from the normal hill. At the beginning of the 2010 summer season, he dominated the Continental Cup and after finishing second at the beginning with a total of six first places, he was finally able to finish the tournament as the overall winner. On January 23, 2011, he won the jumping from the large hill in Zakopane in front of a home crowd and celebrated his first World Cup victory.

In the 2011/12 season, Stoch finished fifth in the overall World Cup and sixth in the ski flying ranking, thus achieving their best results to date.

He finished the Four Hills Tournament 2012/13 with 4th place in the overall ranking, his best placement so far in this competition series. In February 2013, Stoch won his first world title at the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy . With his teammates Piotr Żyła , Dawid Kubacki and Maciej Kot , he and his team won the bronze medal in the team competition behind Austria and Germany and thus the first Polish team medal in ski jumping at a world championship.

Stoch is multiple Polish champion both in individual competitions on the large and normal hill as well as with the team of his club AZS Zakopane.

After the 2012/13 season, he was elected to the FIS Athletes' Commission alongside Sabrina Windmüller to represent the interests of the ski jumpers.

On February 9th, Stoch won gold on the normal hill at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, ahead of Peter Prevc and Anders Bardal . Six days later he also won on the large hill in front of Noriaki Kasai and Prevc. With six victories this season in the World Cup, he decided the overall World Cup of the 2013/14 season with 1,420 points.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he took 17th place on the normal hill and twelfth place on the large hill. In team jumping he won the bronze medal together with Piotr Żyła, Klemens Murańka and Jan Ziobro .

On December 3, 2016, Stoch won the team competition in Klingenthal together with Piotr Żyła , Dawid Kubacki and Maciej Kot . This was the first victory of a Polish team in a World Cup team competition. On January 6, 2017, he won the Four Hills Tournament for the first time with a day win in Bischofshofen . In the subsequent World Cup competitions on January 14th and 15th, he won both competitions and was the first Pole to win a World Cup on the Malinka in Wisła . On March 4, 2017 he won the gold medal in the team competition at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti with Piotr Żyła, Dawid Kubacki and Maciej Kot and was thus able to celebrate his second gold medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships.

At the Four Hills Tournament 2017/18 Stoch became the second jumper after Sven Hannawald in the 2001/02 season , who was able to win all four competitions of the competition series within one season. With the victory in Bischofshofen from the previous season, he got five tour day victories in a row. In addition, this season he won the Willingen Five , the Raw Air , the newly introduced Planica 7 , and with 1443 points and 373 points ahead of the runner-up Richard Freitag for the second time after 2013/14 the overall World Cup. At the Ski Flying World Championship 2018 in Oberstdorf he won the silver medal behind Daniel-André Tande in the individual competition and the bronze medal in the team competition together with Piotr Żyła, Stefan Hula and Dawid Kubacki . These were the first medals for Stoch at a ski flying world championship. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he was again Olympic champion on the large hill in front of Andreas Wellinger and Robert Johansson , after just missing the medal ranks on the normal hill as fourth . In the team competition he won the bronze medal together with Maciej Kot , Stefan Hula and Dawid Kubacki.

Stoch at the 2019 World Cup in Seefeld

At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , after fifth place on the large hill and fourth place in the team competition, he won the silver medal behind his compatriot Dawid Kubacki in jumping on the normal hill. After the first round on the Toni-Seelos-Olympiaschanze , where he was only 18th, things didn’t look good at first. A brilliant second jump brought him almost to the front. In the final mixed team competition he was sixth with the Polish team.

With his 35th World Cup victory in Zakopane on January 26, 2020, Stoch celebrated at least one victory in every year of the decade. Two weeks later, Stoch reached his 70th podium in the World Cup with third place in Willingen . He achieved his third win of the season at Raw Air 2020 in Lillehammer . In addition, he benefited from the premature termination of the competition series due to the COVID-19 pandemic and thus won the overall ranking of Raw Air for the second time in his career.

In the Four Hills Tournament 2020/21 Stoch started with a second place in Oberstdorf and a fourth place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He finished the tour with two victories in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen and thus won the overall tour ranking for the third time. Even in the first World Cup competition after the tour in Titisee-Neustadt , Stoch was unbeatable and with his 39th World Cup victory he equaled Adam Małysz.
