The Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill is a ski flying hill outside the Allgäu town of Oberstdorf ( Bavaria ) in the Stillachtal (Birgsautal). The ski jump is in close proximity to Freibergsee . It is currently the third largest ski jumping hill in the world with a hill size of 235 m and a hill record of 238.5 m. The Kulm (HS 235) in Austria , the Vikersundbakken (HS 240) in Norway and the Letalnica (HS 240) in Slovenia are comparably large .

The diving tower is also referred to by the people of Oberstdorf as the “leaning tower of Oberstdorf” due to its cantilevered prestressed concrete construction. In the tower there are warming and waxing rooms, toilet facilities and a kiosk, as well as an inclined elevator for up to eleven people with jump skis. A platform on the tower offers space for one hundred people.

To this day, the architecturally unique ski jump, which is held only at the height of the take-off table with rock anchors in the mountain, is considered a static masterpiece. The architect was Claus-Peter Horle from Oberstdorf.

history

The first ski jumping hill was built at this point in 1950 as a wooden construction based on a design by the architect and ski jumper Heini Klopfer . Klopfer also carried out the first flight on the hill on February 2nd, 1950. He reached 90 m. In memory of him, the hill bears his name today. Today's inrun tower was built in 1973. In 1986 the functional building was rebuilt. The total costs for the facility amounted to 10,600,000 DM. Due to the developments in ski flying, the structure was modernized several times over the years, especially from 1997 to 2000. A general renovation and further modernization took place in 2016 and 2017. The hill size was also increased from 213 to 225 meters, and the K point was moved from 185 to 200 meters.

Before qualifying for the World Cup, the rebuilt hill was ceremoniously opened on February 2, 2017 with a jump by Karl Geiger from SC Oberstdorf. He landed at 184 meters.

The ski jumping hill architect Heini Klopfer worked out the plans for more than 250 hills worldwide on behalf of the International Ski Association . The plans for the modernization measures and redesign of the ski jump in 2016/2017 were drawn up by the Renn Architekten architectural office in cooperation with the engineering office construction group building .

In the summer of 2017, the FIS increased the hill size from 225 to 235 meters.
