Rudolf "Rudi" Wanner (born January 28, 1951 in Seefeld , Tyrol ) is a former Austrian ski jumper .

Career

Rudi came to jumping through his father as a 9-year-old, and in 1970 he made his debut in the Austrian national team at the Four Hills Tournament in 1970/71 . A first high point of his young career was his participation in the Olympic Games in Sapporo , where he finished 26th on the normal hill and 46th on the large hill. At the 1974 World Championships in Falun , he was only used on the large hill and took 21st place. At the ski flying world championships in 1972 and 1973 he finished 15th and 20th respectively.

Around Rudi Wanner and the older jumpers Reinhold Bachler and Walter Schwabl , the new head coach Baldur Preiml built an Austrian “miracle team” from 1974/75, which was made up of young talents such as Toni Innauer , Karl Schnabl , Alois Lipburger , Willi Pürstl , Hans Wallner , Hans Millonig , Edi Federer , Rupert Gürtler and Alfred Pungg dominated the international competition at times and made Austria the leading ski jumping nation alongside the GDR .

Wanner was overtaken by the rapid development, so that he did not take part in major events such as the Four Hills Tournament and the Ski Flying World Championship in the 1974/75 season. However, Wanner fought his way back together with Reinhold Bachler, who was 6 years older than him: On the 1975/76 tour , he finished fifth overall and qualified for the team for the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck . With the 7th place on his home hill in Seefeld, he also achieved his best placement at a major international event. In the following years, however, there were no further successes, he missed the qualification for the Nordic World Cup in Lahti in 1978, and ended his career after the winter of 78/79. Rudi Wanner was two-time Nordic Combined Champion in 1975 and 1976.
