Reinhold Bachler (born December 26, 1944 in Eisenerz , Styria ) is a former Austrian ski jumper and ski jumping trainer. Before his sports career, Bachler worked as a miner on the Erzberg .
The early years
He celebrated his first successes in 1967 with six victories in FIS jumping. The highlight was on March 12, 1967, when he set a new world record in ski flying at 154 meters on the hill in Vikersund . In 1968 Bachler won the silver medal on the normal hill at the Olympic Games in Grenoble . After Grenoble, Reinhold Bachler was for many years one of the few Austrian ski jumpers who could keep up with the world's best. His biggest handicap was his problem with the jump, which he performed in parallel - as a so-called Kacherl - which meant that he repeatedly dropped valuable points.
Austrian ski jumping wonder team
In 1974/75 the ÖSV team and thus Austria became the number one ski jumping nation overnight. Baldur Preiml , a former teammate of Reinhold Bachler, had become the team's head coach. Preiml's training and the material innovation he initiated had turned everything that had previously applied in ski jumping on its head.
Baldur Preiml built a team of young athletes around the older jumpers Reinhold Bachler, Rudi Wanner and Walter Schwabl : Toni Innauer , Karl Schnabl , Alois Lipburger , Willi Pürstl , Hans Wallner , Hans Millonig , Edi Federer , Rupert Gürtler and Alfred Pungg overtook in the competition from all over the world.
In the wake of this development, Bachler's career took another decisive turn: at the flight week in Vikersund in 1975 he achieved 1st and 2nd place and had great expectations for the ski flying world championship in 1975 on the Kulm in Tauplitz / Bad Mitterndorf . However, he fell badly in the first round and suffered a concussion, a bruised kidney and broken ribs, but he fought his way back one more time. In 1975/76 he was third in the Four Hills Tournament and finished 5th and 6th at the Olympic Games in Innsbruck . He won three more competitions in Sapporo , Murau and Planica , and in Planica he also improved his personal best in ski flying with 172 meters. In total, he was able to achieve 60 podium placements at FIS ski jumping events during his 14-year career as a world class jumper. Just before the Ski Jumping World Cup was introduced, Reinhold Bachler ended his career.
