Walter Schwabl (born August 12, 1949 in Schwarzach im Pongau , Salzburg ) is a former Austrian ski jumper .

Career

Walter grew up in the immediate vicinity of the Schwarzach ski jump, and so came to jumping early on. At the end of the 1960s he was three-time Austrian junior champion and was able to win the junior competitions on the Finnish jumping tour in 1967 and 1968. His first major event was his participation in the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble , where he was not used. There followed rather lean years, he missed both the 1970 World Cup and the 1972 Olympic Games. It was not until the winter of 1972/73 that he came out again with good performances. After jumps over 151 m and 162 m at the Ski Flying World Championships in Oberstdorf 1973, he finished 9th in the overall ranking. In contrast to Reinhold Bachler and Rudi Wanner, he had no answer, and was, against the push of the young Austrian guard around Toni Innauer , Karl Schnabl , Alois Lipburger , Willi Pürstl , Hans Wallner , Hans Millonig , Edi Federer , Rupert Gürtler and Alfred Pungg no longer able to jump in the front field. Only at the ski flying week in Oberstdorf in 1976 did he show again when he was able to improve his personal best distance to 173 m. Walter Schwabl ended his career in the spring of 1977.
