Veli-Matti Olavi Lindström (born November 15, 1983 in Nastola ) is a former Finnish ski jumper . He lives in Lahti and starts for the Lahden Hiihtoseura association .

Career

Lindström started skiing in 1988 at the age of four. In 1995, at the age of twelve, he was appointed to the national team and finally made his debut on January 1, 1999 at the age of 15 at the New Year's event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the ski jumping World Cup . In the same year he won bronze in the individual and silver with the Finnish team at the Junior World Championships in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, Austria . At the 2000 in Štrbské Pleso , Slovakia , he was third in the team competition with the Finnish team. However, it was not until November 24, 2000 that he achieved his first World Cup points in Kuopio .

Lindström was Finnish champion in the 2000/01 season and later even junior world champion in individual and with the team in Karpacz, Poland . He also achieved 5th place on the normal hill. In the same year he achieved his first podium place in the ski flying competition in Oberstdorf when he finished 2nd. He celebrated his first World Cup victory with the team at ski flying in Planica, and he finished the overall World Cup in 18th place.

In the 2001/02 season he was also able to win victories on the large hill in Lahti and again in ski flying in Planica, also with the team. He also took part in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , took 5th place in the individual competition on the normal hill and won the silver medal with the team behind the German team. At the ski flying world championships in Harrachov, he finished fourth in the individual. His best individual result of the season was a 3rd place in Willingen. He finished the overall World Cup 2001/2002 in 19th place.

Also in the 2002/03 season he won ski flying with the team in Planica and was 22nd in the overall World Cup. In addition, on the same day that his team-mate Matti Hautamäki set the ski flying world record of 231 meters in Planica, he could almost beat it, but after landing Lindström had to reach into the snow at 232.5 meters. In the summer of 2003 he also achieved two third places in the Summer Grand Prix, which he finished in eighth place overall.

The 2003/04 season started for the Finn with two third places at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo, and he was also able to fight for a podium finish with second place in the third competition of the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck. At the ski flying world championship in Planica he won the silver medal in team jumping. The Finn finished his best World Cup season in 15th place overall.

Before the 2005/06 season he was seriously injured and was only used in the ski jumping Continental Cup that season . At the last competition of the season in Planica he was part of the Finnish squad, but could not qualify for the competition.

The 2006/07 season began for Lindström with a surprising 4th place in Kuusamo , whereupon Lindström got a place in the Finnish World Cup team again. However, he lost this place after insufficient results in the middle of the 2007/08 season .

In the 2008/09 season , the Finn was temporarily used as the sixth man in the World Cup team, but could not convince with his results.

In the summer of 2009, Lindström announced on his homepage that he had been suffering from a prolonged infection for a long time, which made it impossible for him to exercise due to breathing difficulties and an increased pulse even when he was resting. Although he started at the Continental Cup in Rovaniemi at the beginning of the 2009/2010 winter season, he finished last there and has not jumped any competitions since then due to illness. In December 2009 he announced via the blog on his homepage that the antibiotic therapy had been unsuccessful and nobody really knew what kind of infection he was suffering from, but the therapy would be continued and he was initially on a break from competition.

In summer 2010, Lindström took then the first time in competitions at national level, the so-called Finnjumping Cup , in part. Since then, he has occasionally competed in the Continental Cup, in which he twice jumped into the points in February 2011 in the US Iron Mountain . At the Finnish Championships in Lahti in September 2011 , he was able to win the team competition with Lahden Hiihtoseura's team.
