Nastola is a place and a former municipality in southern Finland . Nastola is located around 20 kilometers east of the city of Lahti on the southern edge of the Finnish lake district in the Päijät-Häme region . On September 30, 2014 the community had 14,935 inhabitants on an area of ​​362.89 km² (324.22 km² of which land area and 38.67 km² inland water area).

history

The community had existed since 1865 and, in addition to the parish village of Nastola, included the towns of Arrajoki, Immilä, Järvinen, Koiskala, Lankila, Pyhäntaka, Ruuhijärvi, Uusikylä, Vanaja, Villähde, Rakokivi and Seesta-Luhtaanmaa. On January 1, 2016, it was incorporated into Lahti .

During the Winter War of 1941 and during the Continuation War until 1945, Finland's central prisoner-of-war camp was located in Nastola . During this time a total of 64,188 Soviet soldiers were interned here. The 1,055 Red Army soldiers who did not survive imprisonment were buried in their own cemetery. In 1987 a three-meter-high bronze statue of " Mother Russia " was erected there in memory of the Soviet Union .

Attractions

Another monument was created in 1990 in memory of the many construction workers on the railway line from St. Petersburg to Riihimäki established that a 1868 typhus - epidemic fell victim.

The parish church of Nastola was built in 1802-04 according to plans by Mats Åkergren , the free-standing church tower as early as 1760. The baroque interior dates from the 17th century and was taken over from the previous building; they were donated in the 17th century by Dietrich von Essen, the landlord of the nearby Seesta homestead.
