The Salpausselkä ski jump is a ski jumping facility in Lahti, Finland . It is named after the Salpausselkä mountain range.

The Lahti Ski Games take place there every year, and between 1997 and 2010 the first event of the Nordic Tournament was held with interruptions .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017 , the jumping competitions were held for the seventh time on the Salpausselkä ski jump after 1926 , 1938 , 1958 , 1978 , 1989 and 2001 .

history

Ski jump during the Nordic World Ski Championships 2001

In 1923 the Lahti Ski Games took place for the first time, there were and still are competitions in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined in addition to ski jumping . In 1926 the Nordic World Ski Championships were held for the first time in Lahti, making the southern Finnish city an international winter sports center. At that time, a width of 38.5 meters was sufficient for the victory jump on the normal hill.

In 1938 the ski jumps and ski stadium were built for the second Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti and competed for the first time in front of around 100,000 spectators. Even in the war years, ski jumping competitions were held, especially national championships, with many jumpers coming directly from the front.

In 1957 the ski jumps and jumping stadium were radically renewed once more, and in 1958 the Nordic World Championships took place in Lahti once again. The jumping on the normal hill was won by local hero Juhani Kärkinen .

In 1971 the new building took place at its current location, a K90 and a K70 have now been built. In 1978 the fourth Nordic World Ski Championships took place in Lahti.

In 1985 the jumps were finally built in their current form, i.e. a HS 130, an HS 97 and an HS 70. All three bakken are covered with plastic mattings. Since then, minor profile adjustments have been made to keep the jumps up to date with the latest technology.

In 2001 the Nordic World Ski Championships took place in Lahti for the sixth time , which was a record. To host the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017 to Lahti again applied to host. In 2012 Lahti was awarded the World Cup.

HS 130 (large hill)

Since the World Cup was founded in the 1979/80 season, the Große Salpausselkä ski jump can be found regularly in the calendar. Between 1997 and 2010, the first event of the Nordic Tournament took place here eight times .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 , Martin Schmitt was able to triumph in the individual competition, and the team jumping on the large hill also went to the German team. In 2017 Stefan Kraft became world champion in the individual competition.

The normal hill still has a valid FIS certificate. Occasionally, international competitions are also held on it. Among other things, World Cup competitions were moved from the large hill to the normal hill in 2009, 2012 and 2016; In 2009, as in 1999 and 2000, the Nordic Tournament kick-off competition took place on this hill.

At the 2001 World Cup , Adam Małysz won the individual competition, and team gold went to Austria. In 2017, Carina Vogt won the individual titles for women and Stefan Kraft for men, as well as Germany gold in the mixed team competition.
