Pekka Ilmari Salminen (born June 3, 1981 in Joroinen ) is a former Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Salminen has been participating in school and junior competitions since 1987. At the Junior World Championships in 1998 in St. Moritz , he and the team won the bronze medal. Then he was used in the jumping in Lahti and Kuopio for the first time in the World Cup , but could not prevail. After he was able to take second place again with the team at the 1999 Junior World Championships, which this time in Saalfelden , he was used again in March 1999 at the World Cups in Kuopio and Lahti. He was able to achieve World Cup points for the first time with a 27th place in Kuopio, and 2 days later in Lahti he was even able to jump into the top 10 in eighth place. He then took part in the remaining World Cups until the end of the season, but only finished behind. In the summer of 1999 he took part in the mat jumping of the Summer Grand Prix and was able to increase his performance so that he finished 17th in the overall ranking. In the 1999/2000 season he took part continuously in the World Cup and on the one hand was able to occupy several places among the top fifteen, on the other hand he was eliminated more often after the first round. In the summer of 2000 he again took part in the Summer Grand Prix. A sixth place in Hinterzarten was his best result. At the beginning of the 2000/01 World Cup season he took part in the opening competition held in Kuopio and was able to occupy two 30th places. After that he did not appear in any jumping for the rest of the season or in the summer of 2001. In the winter of 2001/02 Salminen started again, but switched back and forth between the World Cup and the Continental Cup (COC). While he took top positions in the COC and was even able to celebrate a victory, he remained largely unsuccessful in the World Cup and mostly missed the second round. However, he was able to achieve a podium place in the World Cup with third place in a team competition in Sapporo . At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he started again in the Continental Cup, but moved to the World Cup at the end of January after showing good performances. He took part in this until the end of the season, but always fought for a place in the second round. In the summer of 2003 he took part in two COC summer competitions in Trondheim , where he was able to place in the top five. In the winter of 2003/04 he mainly took part in the Continental Cups, but also got assignments in some World Cups. Although he showed mixed performances at the 2004 COC summer jumping competitions, he competed in the World Cup at the start of the 2004/05 season. After he had achieved a 26 and a 33 place in the jumping in Kuusamo , he broke his left femur on December 1, 2004 in a training fall in Kuopio . In March 2005 it was announced that his knee was injured in the fall, which meant that another operation was necessary. In December 2005 he went back to the Continental Cup, but could only occupy back places. He then took part in two competitions in the third-class FIS Cup . After he could not convince with these either, he ended the season prematurely. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season, he returned to some Continental Cups with moderate success. After he started at the Universiade in Pragelato in January 2007 and finished 15th on the large hill, he ended his active career.

Since the beginning of the 2008/09 season he has been active as a ski technician for the Finnish World Cup team.
