Parish Church of Joroinen |
Joroinen [ ˈjoroi̯nen ] ( Swedish Jorois ) is a municipality with 4812 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in eastern Finland. It is located 15 km south of the city of Varkaus in the Lake District landscape Savo . Today, Joroinen speaks exclusively Finnish .
Joroinen has existed as an independent parish since 1631 . There are several historic mansions in the municipality , including Koskenhovi and Frugård manors. Because in the high society of these feudal buildings French was often spoken appropriately, Joroinen is nicknamed "the Paris of Savo". Up until the 19th century, much of the arable land in the municipality belonged to the Finnish-Swedish nobility. The wooden parish church of Joroinen was built at the end of the 18th century.
Varkaus Airport is located in the area of the municipality, immediately east of the church village . From the end of April 2008 it will be used again for passenger traffic to Helsinki.
