The Saimaan silta bridge |
Puumala [ ˈpuːmɑlɑ ] is a municipality in southeastern Finland . It is located around 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Helsinki in the Saimaa lake area.
Puumala has existed as a parish since 1662, as a political municipality since 1868. In addition to the parish village of Puumala, it includes the widely scattered settlements Hamula, Harmaala, Himahuuha, Huhtimaa, Hurissalo, Huuhkaala, Ihalais, Junninmäki, Kaipaala, Kauppila, Keriniemi, Kietävälä, Kiljula, Kokkola, Kontila, Kyllölä, Lampila, Liimattala, Lintusalo, Luukkola, Maunola, Miettula, Muuramäki, Niinimäki, Niinisaari, Ollila, Pellilä, Petäjäniemi, Pirttimäki, Piskola, Silkoklahti, Repola, Rokylota, Sipkokyläala, Sepophylota, Ruopanale Sorjola, Torsantaka, Valtola, and Vesiniemi.
Around 2800 people live in Puumala; in summer, however, the number of inhabitants triples because of the many holidaymakers who move into their summer homes. There are more than 3700 Mökkis for every 1200 houses in the municipality that are inhabited all year round . Commerce and tourism are also the municipality's largest industries ; Agriculture, forestry and the woodworking industry, in which 24 percent of the workforce are employed, are of great importance.
Puumala is located in the southern part of the Savo landscape, divided by countless branches of the Saimaa Lake and Osern . The coastline in the municipality is more than 3000 kilometers, the number of islands with a size of more than 20 ares is more than 1000. In the north Puumala has a share of the island Hurissalo , the largest inland island of the Saimaa lake with 174 square kilometers.
Puumala Parish Church is one of the largest wooden churches in Finland. It was completed in 1832 and can accommodate 1200 people.
The new landmark of the community, however, is the bridge over the Puumalansalmi strait, completed in 1995, near the church village. With a length of 781 meters, it is the fourth longest bridge in Finland.

Description of the coat of arms : In the black shield there are three silver tips reaching to the upper edge of the shield , each with an ignited grenade , reminding of the Puumala incident at the beginning of the Russo-Swedish War (1788) .
